Oxidation
Loss of electrons, resulting in an increase in oxidation state
Reduction
Gain of electrons, resulting in a decrease in oxidation state
Half equations for redox reactions
Show the reducing agent becoming oxidised, or the oxidising agent becoming reduced
Oxidising agent
The species that is reduced and accepts electrons from the reducing agent.
Reducing agent
The species that is oxidised and donates electrons to the oxidising agent.
What 2 things must be thought about when balancing redox reactions
Number of atoms
Charge
How to balance redox reactions
Balance the number of atoms.
Work out the half equations using the oxidation states
Make the number of electrons gained = the number of electrons lost
Check the charges are balanced
