Active Sentence Structure
A sentence format in Module E consisting of Subject, Verb, Object, Means, and Purpose.
Passive Sentence Structure
An inverted sentence format where the object becomes the subject and the past participle of the verb is used with the verb to be.
Impersonal
A characteristic of passive sentences where there is no mention of the person who does the action, focusing only on the action or function.
Agent
The 'doer' of an action in a passive sentence, typically introduced by the word "by" (e.g., the servo in "moved by the servo").
Simplified English Passive Rule
A restriction where the use of the passive is limited as much as possible and is not used in Procedures.
Preposition "by" (Passive Usage)
Used to follow a passive verb to indicate the agent or doer.
Preposition "with" (Passive Usage)
Used to follow a passive verb to indicate the substance, such as "supplied with air" or "maintained in place with 3 screws".
Preposition "from" (Passive Usage)
Used to follow a passive verb to indicate the origin, such as "controlled from the flight deck" or "opened from the ground".
Preposition "to" (Objective Usage)
Used after a passive verb to indicate the objective or purpose, such as "advanced to increase thrust".
Preposition "to" (Movement/Connection Usage)
Used after a passive verb to indicate connection or movement, such as "attached to the bulkhead".
Modals in Passive Voice
Helping verbs like can, must, shall, may, need, should, and could that are used with a passive construction.
Trim Indicators
Components that provide indication of stabilizer position.
Proximity Sensor
A device operated by a target.
EPR
A component that activates the take-off warning horn.
ND
The display where a pilot may display the weather image.
Bonding Jumpers
Components through which static electricity is transmitted.
C/B
An abbreviation for a component that must be safetied.
Trim Wheel Rotation Limit
The pilot can rotate the trim wheel 3 turns in either direction.
Hydraulic Systems Powering Servos
The servos are powered by 3 hydraulic systems.
