Cerebral Arteries Bilateral Occlusion

Anterior

• paraplegia ( paralysis of bilateral lower body)

• incontinence

• abulic aphasia (lack of will or initiative)

• personality changes

• akinetic mutism (spontaneous movement and speech)

• conscious unresponsiveness

Middle

• contralateral hemiplegia (one side)

• sensory impairment

• Global (both), Wernicke’s (receptive), & Broca’s (expressive)

Posterior

• thalamic pain syndrome

  • abnormal sensation of pain, temp, touch, and proprioception

• cortical blindness (loss of vision)

Vertebral-basiar

• locked-in syndrome

• coma or vegetative state

• Wallenberg syndrome (stroke in the brainstem)

  • ipsilateral fascial pain, ataxia (lack of coordination and control of voluntary muscle movements) , vertigo (sensation of movement, typically spinning or whirling)

  • temperature impairment

  • contralateral pain and temperature impairments
