What is a reflex action?

A fast, automatic/involuntary response that protects the body from harm.

What is the purpose of a reflex?

To react quickly and prevent further harm/damage.

What is different about a reflex compared with a normal stimulus-response?

A reflex uses the spinal cord as the control centre, allowing a response before the brain consciously processes it.

What is the order

Stimulus → receptor → sensory neuron → interneuron/CNS → motor neuron → effector → response

What is a stimulus?

Something that causes a response in the body.

What is a receptor?

Detects the stimulus.

What is an effector?

The muscle or gland that carries out the response.
