Primary dentition/Deciduous dentition
first dentition to develop
Permanent dentition
second dentition to develop
Universal numbering system (UNS)
Primary and permanent teeth both designated. Primary A-J/K-T, Permanent 1-16/17-32
International numbering system (INS)
Tooth designation using two-digit code. System can be used internationally as well as by electronic data transfer
Palmer Notation Method
tooth designation when oral cavity is divided into quadrants
Dentition periods
three throughout lifetime including primary, mixed, permanent
Primary dentition period
only primary teeth present
Mixed dentition period
follows primary period, both primary and permanent dentition present during this transitional stage
Permanent dentition
final dentition period
Dental anatomy
area of dental science dealing with morphology or form of the teeth for both crown and root
Alveolus (alveoli)
socket(s) of tooth
Alveolar process
dental arch or tooth
Mandibular arch
lower arch
Maxillary teeth
teeth in the maxilla
Mandibular teeth
teeth in the mandible
Occlusion
method by which the teeth of the mandibular arch contact with this of maxillary arch
Midline
vertical reference line that divides arch into two approximately equal halves; right and left
Anterior teeth
incisors and canines, closest to the midline of each dental arch
Posterior teeth
premolars (if present) and molars, farthest from the midline
Quadrants
division dental arches into two parts with four quadrants
DAQT system
Dentition / Arch / Quadrant / Tooth type
Sextants
dental arch division into three parts based on relationship to midline
Anatomic crown
part of crown covered by enamel
Clinical crown
part of anatomic crown observable and not covered by gingiva
Gingival recession
marginal gingiva recedes apically
Anatomic root
part of root covered by cementum
Clinical root
part of anatomic root observable and not covered by gingiva
Root axis line
representing long axis of tooth drawn to divide cervical line
Root concavities
indentation on surface of root
Furcation
area between two or more of these roots
Masticatory surface
chewing surface on most superior surface of crown
Incisal surface
masticatory surface for anterior teeth
Occlusal surface
masticatory surface of posterior teeth
Ridges
linear elevations on masticatory surface of either anterior or posterior teeth
Cusp
one or more major elevation on masticatory surface of canine and posterior teeth
Mesial
closest or more anterior to midline
Distal
farthest or most posterior from midline
Proximal
together both mesial and distal (surfaces between any adjacent teeth)
Interproximal space
area between adjacent tooth surfaces
Contact area
adjacent tooth crowns in the same arch touch on each proximal surface
Height of contour
greatest bulge or elevation of tooth crown
Embrasure
spaces from curvatures where two teeth in the same arch contact
Line angle
line formed by junction of two crown surfaces, designated by combining names of those two surfaces
Point angle
junction of three surfaces of crown, designated by combining name of those three surfaces
Thirds
crown surface or root division into three parts, crown horizontally and vertically and root horizontally
