Microorganism, microbe
An organism or microscopic agent too small to be seen clearly with the naked eye, including bacteria, fungi, protozoa, algae, and viruses.
Fungi
Eukaryotic organisms, including molds and yeasts, that acquire nutrients from other organisms and possess cell walls.
Protozoa
Single-celled eukaryotic microorganisms that are typically motile and lack cell walls.
Algae
Photosynthetic eukaryotic organisms that possess cell walls and can be unicellular or multicellular.
Bacteria
Single-celled prokaryotic microorganisms that usually possess cell walls containing peptidoglycan and lack a membrane-bound nucleus.
Archaea
Single-celled prokaryotic microorganisms that lack peptidoglycan in their cell walls and often inhabit extreme environments.
Viruses
Acellular infectious agents composed of nucleic acid surrounded by a protein coat that require a host cell to replicate.
Prokaryotes

Compound
A substance formed when atoms of two or more different elements combine chemically in fixed ratios.
Chemical bond
An attractive force between atoms that holds them together to form molecules or compounds.
Nonpolar covalent bond
A covalent bond formed when two atoms share electrons equally due to similar electronegativities.
Polar covalent bond
A covalent bond formed when two atoms share electrons unequally, resulting in partial positive and negative charges.
Ionic bond
A chemical bond formed by electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions following electron transfer.
Electronegativity
A measure of the relative attraction an atom has for shared electrons in a chemical bond.
Ion

Cation

Anion
A negatively charged ion formed when an atom gains one or more electrons.

A weak attraction between a partially positive hydrogen atom in one polar molecule and an electronegative atom in another.
Chemical reaction
A process involving the breaking and forming of chemical bonds to transform reactant substances into product substances.
Reactant
A starting substance that undergoes change during a chemical reaction.
Product
A substance produced as a result of a chemical reaction.
Polar molecule
A molecule containing an unequal distribution of electrical charge, resulting in distinct positive and negative poles.
Nonpolar molecule
A molecule possessing equal charge distribution without distinct positive or negative electrical poles.
Hydrophilic
Describing substances that have an affinity for water and readily interact with or dissolve in polar solvents.
Hydrophobic
Describing nonpolar substances that lack an affinity for water and do not dissolve in aqueous solutions.
Functional group
A specific arrangement of atoms within an organic molecule that confers characteristic chemical properties and reactions.
Hydroxyl group
A functional group consisting of a hydrogen atom bonded to an oxygen atom (-OH).
Amino group
A functional group consisting of a nitrogen atom bonded to two hydrogen atoms (-NH2).
Carboxyl group
A functional group consisting of a carbon double-bonded to an oxygen and single-bonded to a hydroxyl group (-COOH).
Phosphate group
A functional group consisting of a phosphorus atom bonded to four oxygen atoms (-PO43−).
Acid
A substance that dissociates in water to yield hydrogen ions (H+), decreasing the solution's pH.
Base
A substance that accepts hydrogen ions or yields hydroxide ions (OH−) in water, increasing the solution's pH.
pH
A logarithmic measurement of the concentration of hydrogen ions (H+) in a solution, indicating acidity or alkalinity.
Endothermic
Describing a chemical reaction or physical process that absorbs thermal energy from its surroundings.
Exothermic
Describing a chemical reaction or physical process that releases thermal energy into its surroundings.
Monomer
A small molecular subunit that can bind to other similar subunits to build a larger polymer.
Polymer
A large molecule composed of many repeating monomer subunits joined together by chemical bonds.
Dehydration synthesis
A chemical reaction that joins monomer molecules together with the removal of a water molecule.
Hydrolysis
A chemical reaction that breaks covalent bonds in polymers by the addition of a water molecule.
Lipid
