free will → people have conscious control and freedom to choose their behaviour and we have the ability to reject internal or external pressures

determinism → we are controlled by internal and external factors and individuals have no control or freedom of their behaviour

hard determinism → behaviour is a result of internal or external causes and we don’t have any choice

soft determinism → result of internal and external cases but people make conscious decisions

bio → controlled bt bio factors

environmental → controlled by extnerla - peers or family

psychic - controlled by unconscious conflicts

detemrinsms is important to psychology as it provides scientific discipline. this is because determinism can provide us with a causal explanation as it shows cause and effect between two variables. this allows researchers to be confidence that one factors leads to a certain behaviour. by having cause and effect established, general laws can be used.

COUNTER: unfalsifiable. states that all beahcoiur has a cause which leads to the effect, however, in many areas a cause has not been found. we cannot prove it right or wrong. for example, if we knew wy criminals broke the law, we could prevent this, but there is no way of establishing true cause, therefore determinism is unfalsifiable and less supported

postive stance. allows people to believes they have choice over behaviour, which many have positive effect on mental health. research suggests those with internal LOC tend to be more mentally healthy compared to those who have external LOC.

British legal system is based on the idea that people of self control and responsibility. hard determinism is inconsistent with this view as it suggests people have no control over behaviour. this decreases support for determinists as it less applicable to the real world, making free will more appropriate
