What is an AED? Who can it be used on?

An Automated External Defibrillator that delivers shocks to a victim’s heart to restore their normal heart rate.

It can be used only on adults and children, not infants.

What are the 4 stages of CPR for Adults and Children (includes Infants- but don’t use AED on them)?

  1. Check the victim for a response by asking if they’re okay.

  2. Tell another person to call 911 and get an AED, but do it yourself if no one else’s there.

  3. If the victim is breathing, put them in the rescue position, or else deliver CPR.

  4. Continue CPR until the AED arrives, the victim can breathe again, or you can’t physically continue.

What should you do if you’re alone and can’t find anyone to help you with CPR?

Leave the victim temporarily to find help but continue compressions afterwards and call 911 and get an AED.

What are the 4 stages for Choking?

  1. Ask victim if they need help, if yes then ready abdominal thrusts and tell someone to call 911.

  2. If the victim can make noise then encourage them to cough, or deliver abdominal thrusts.

  3. If they lose consciousness, lay them on the ground and perform CPR while checking for an object in their mouth every 30 seconds.

  4. The victim should check for internal damages post-abdominal thrusts.
