Aqueous Solution
A solution in which water is the solvent.
Electrolyte
A substance that conducts electricity when dissolved in water or melted.
Non-electrolyte
A substance that does not conduct electricity when dissolved in water.
Dissociation
The separation of ions that occurs when an ionic compound dissolves in water.
Ionization
The process where molecules undergo a chemical change to form ions in solution.
Hydration
The process by which water molecules surround and interact with solute ions or molecules.
Heat of Hydration
The amount of energy released when solute particles are surrounded by water.
Solubility
The ability of a substance to dissolve in a solvent.
Precipitation Reaction
A reaction where soluble compounds form an insoluble product.
Net Ionic Equation
An equation that shows only the species that participate in a chemical reaction in solution.
Colligative Properties
Properties that depend on the number of solute particles in a solution, such as boiling point elevation and freezing point depression.
Strong Electrolyte
A compound that completely ionizes in solution, yielding 100% ions.
Weak Electrolyte
A solute that ionizes partially in solution, resulting in relatively low concentrations of ions.
Freezing Point Depression
The decrease in the freezing point of a solvent when a solute is dissolved.
Boiling Point Elevation
The increase in the boiling point of a solvent when a solute is dissolved.
Ion Pairing
The phenomenon where ions in a solution may recombine at higher concentrations, affecting the degree of dissociation.
