What are the three main types of Attenuation?
1) Absorption
2) Scattering
3) Imperfections in the fibers.
Scattering
A Type of Attenuation.
Light deviates from its path due to impurities or imperfections in the fiber.
Attenuation
Reduction of optical power (signal strength) as light travels through the fiber.
What are the three main types of Dispersion?
1) Chromatic Dispersion
2) Modal Dispersion
3) Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD
Dispersion - Fiber Characteristics
Spreading or broadening of light pulses as it travels through the fiber.
Dispersion limits the bandwidth and transmission distance of a fiber optic link.
Instrinic Absorption
Refers to the inherent loss of light energy within a fiber optic cable due to the interaction of light with the materials that make up the fiber itself.
Even in a perfectly pure and flawless fiber, some light energy will inevitably be absorbed by the glass material.
