top lord. lesser lords, monarchs. often called those who fight because those who protect the manor are in here. they do no manual labor

clergy

- those who pray (catholic church)
- every manor has atleast priest, but most manors have two or more
- services, baptism, funerals, weddings
- church owns the piece of land that the church is on

peasants

- those who work

tied to the land, whoever owns the land "owns" the serf

the church stresses

peasants do what on the manor?

- in charge of harvesting and planting all the food
- all the physical labor and repairs
- every peasant is assigned a portion of the year to do labor

financial responsibilities of the peasants/lord

- pay to use tools
- pay for seed
- pay general taxes
- pay tithe

a medieval association of craftsmen or merchants, often having considerable power.

when a knew ruler comes the church recognizes that ruler and that makes the ruler

legitimate in the eyes of the ruler

church has 2 powers:

excommunication and interdict

excommunication

- removes an individual from the church
cannot be married, no last rights, his eternal destination is hell, not baptised

interdict

- church removes the priest from the community
- kicks out an entire area of people

is tithe mandatory
