Bond Formation
The process during which energy is released as chemical bonds are formed.
Physical Change
A change in state where no new substances form and molecular formulas remain identical, such as liquid water evaporating into water vapor (H2O(l)→H2O(g)).
Chemical Process
A transformation that requires breaking molecules apart and rearranging atoms to form completely new substances.
Density
The ratio of a substance's mass divided by its volume (density=volumemass).
Milliliter to Cubic Centimeter Equivalence
The exact metric volume equivalence where 1cm3 is equal to 1mL.
Direct Relationship (Density and Mass)
The mathematical relationship where density increases as mass increases, provided volume remains constant.
Inverse Relationship (Density and Volume)
The mathematical relationship where density decreases as volume increases, provided mass remains constant.
Silica Aerogel
The lowest density solid mentioned in the lecture, containing trapped air and acting as an extremely effective insulator.
Density of Gold
A high solid density value specified as 19.3g/cm3.
Density of Liquid Water
The benchmark liquid density value of 1g/cm3 (or 1g/mL).
Density of Ice
The density of solid water, roughly 0.92g/cm3, which causes ice to float because water uniquely expands upon freezing.
