King John was meant to

Successfully deal with any rebellions

Maintain good relations with the church and the pope

King John fell out with

The pope and the barons

Why did he fall out with the pope

The pope wanted Stephen Langton to be the Archbishop of Canterbury but John wanted someone who would be less loyal to the pope

How did the pope retaliate

cancelling all church services, including marriages and funerals. This made the barons very unhappy as they thought they would go to hell

King John was bad in battle…

Lost vast areas of territory in France that England once ruled over. So he Struggled to raise enough money to govern and defend the country

However some remember John as

A good king due to his religious tolerance and fair justice system

The barons were unhappy because

John's poor battle record

They had to pay high scutage

Worried about invasions from foreign countries

He repeatedly ignored the demands of the great council

Baron's dissatisfaction

Raised an army against him and occupied London
