Antibody
An antibody is a protein produced by the immune system to recognize and neutralize antigens. Each antibody is designed to bind to a specific antigen.
Antigen
substances (usually proteins) on the surface of cells, viruses, fungi, or bacteria. They are referred to as foreign because the immune system doesn’t recognize them and produces antibodies to fight against them.
epitope
Specific localized region on an antigen that is recognized by the immune system, specifically B cells and T cells.
paratope
Antigen-binding site on an antibody the region on the antibody that specifically interacts with an antigen.
immunohistochemistry (IHC)
Immunofluorescence (IF)
B cells
a type of lymphocyte (white blood cell) that produces antibodies that are responsible for neutralizing pathogens.
T cells
a type of lymphocyte (white blood cell) that kills infected cells or helps B cells produce more antibodies.
