Weak Activators
Alkyl Groups (stabilizes through hyper conjugation)
Weak Deactivators
Halogens(the pull through their electro negativity can resonate through their lone pairs direct ortho-para.
Strong Deactivators
CN, NO2, SO3H, CO2R, COR (Withdraw through resonance, they are meta directors. Categorize these groups on a benzene rings).
Activating group
Leads to faster reaction of derivatives relative to benzene.
Deactivating Group
Leads to slower reaction of derivatives relative to benzene, all are m directors except for halogens which are o,p directors. Meta substitution is favored because it is the least unfavorable.
