Tragedy
A narrative about serious and important actions that ends unhappily.
Star-Crossed Lovers
Couples whose relationship is often thwarted by outside forces; in this case referring to Romeo and Juliet.
Exposition
The beginning part of a play where the setting, main characters, and conflict are introduced.
Rising Action
A series of complications that occur as the main characters attempt to resolve their conflicts.
Crisis
The turning point in a story where the conflict reaches a peak.
Falling Action
Events that follow the crisis and lead towards resolution.
Climax
The most intense part of the story, typically where the main characters face their greatest challenge.
Denouement
The resolution of the plot; where all lingering issues are resolved.
Iambic Pentameter
A type of meter in poetry where each line has five iambs, an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable.
Prologue
An introduction to a play or literary work, giving a summary of the story or theme.
Archaic Words
Words that are old-fashioned and no longer widely used in contemporary language.
Couplet
Two consecutive lines of poetry that rhyme.
Antagonist
A character or force that opposes the main character, creating conflict.
Protagonist
The main character in a literary work, often facing challenges and driving the plot.
Foil
A character who contrasts with another character, usually the protagonist, highlighting certain qualities.
Sonnets
A poetic form consisting of 14 lines, typically written in iambic pentameter.

Visually descriptive language used to create mental images for the reader.

The use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities, often enhancing meaning in literature.
