Substance-related and Addictive Disorders
Range of problems associated with the use and misuse of drugs such as alcohol, cocaine, heroin, and other substances people use to alter the way they think, feel, and behave. These are extremely costly in human and financial terms.

Impulse-Control Disorders
Disorders in which a person acts on an irresistible, but potentially harmful, impulse. Inability to resist acting on a drive or temptation, included in this group are those who cannot resist aggressive impulses or the impulse to steal or set fires.

Polysubstance Use
Use of multiple mind-altering and behaviour-altering substances such as drugs
Substance Use
Use of substance:
Ingestion of psychoactive substances in moderate amounts - does not significantly interfere with social, educational, or occupational functioning
Examples: morning coffee, drink with friend etc.
Substance Intoxication
Substance Intoxication: Drunkenness
Interaction of variables: Type of drug taken, the amount ingested, the person’s individual biological reaction
Intoxication experienced as impaired judgment, mood changes, and lowered motor ability
Substance Use Disorder
Disorder described as an addiction, a psychological dependence, behavioural reactions to substance dependence, dependence can be present without misuse
Physiological Dependence:
Tolerance: greater amounts of drug needed to experienced same effect
Withdrawal: negative physical response when the substance is no longer ingested
Psychoactive Substances
Substances, such as drugs, that alter mood or behaviour
Involves cocaine, heroin, alcohol, nicotine and caffeine
Safe drugs like caffeine and nicotine and alcohol can also affect mood and behaviour, can be addictive and they account for more health problems than illegal drugs
