how do electrons produce a magnetic field?

by flowing/simply moving in a conductor

2
New cards

what is the left hand rule for straight conductors?

curled fingers holding wire: mag field lines

thumb: e flow

info needed: field lines and e flow

3
New cards

what is a solenoid?

coiled wire that acts like a magnet when electric current is run thru it/creates a mag field. Contains a metallic core which strengthens mag field. the mag field inside a solenoid flows from south to north.

4
New cards

what is the left hand rule for solenoids?

curled fingers: e flow

thumb: north

info needed: e flow, poles

5
New cards

what is the rule for the attraction between field lines?

when field lines move in opposite directions they push togther/their mag forces move towards eacoher. when field lines move in the same direction they push apart/their mag forces push away from each other.

6
New cards

how is a magnetic force produced?

field lines interacting

7
New cards

what is flemings left hand rule?

thumb: e flow

fingers: dir of mag field

palm: dir of mag force

info needed: dir of forces, mag field, mag forces

8
New cards

what is lenz’s law?

a magnet moving towards a wire produces a current (an external mag field/magnet can be used to induce electrons to move). the magnetic force opposes the applied force.

9
New cards

if an external applied force is applied towards the solenoid what will the solenoid do?

push a force (magnetic force) back towards the magnet/repel it. the forces will always be oppostie of eachother.

10
New cards

what is applied force?

force applied to move the wire

11
New cards

what is the magnetic force?

force created as a result of current in wire induced by magnets.

12
New cards

describe a DC generator

the metal rings are not connected and the current does not change directions. at 0 degrees and 180 degrees the current leaving the generator is maximized because the wire coil is directly perpendicular to the mag field lines. at 90 degrees there is no current leaving the generator because they are parallel.

13
New cards

decribe an AC generator

two sides of coil are connected to two diff rings, and current changes directions after 180 degrees or rotation.

how is current produced in a generator?

current is produced when a wire/conductor rotates within a field (between the two magnets). the magnetic field exerts a force on the moving electrons in the wire, creating an electromotive force that causes current to flow through the wire. max current is produced when the magnetic field lines are directly perpendicular to the wire. when the wire is parallel to the field lines/does not intersect, it produces the least amount of current/0.
