Insight therapies
Therapies based on the idea that understanding the source of symptoms leads to better control and management, improving mental health.
Psychoanalysis
One of the first forms of psychotherapy focused on helping patients gain insight into unconscious conflicts causing their symptoms.
Free association
A technique where the patient talks about whatever comes to mind in any order, encouraged by the psychoanalyst.
Dream analysis
The process of analyzing dreams by examining the manifest content (storyline) and latent content (underlying symbols) to uncover unconscious motives.
Resistance
Attempts by the patient to block the progression of therapy, which can include laughter, silence, changing the subject, or skipping sessions.
Transference
A process where a patient projects their feelings onto the psychoanalyst.

Client-centered therapy
A non-directive form of therapy developed by Carl Rogers where the client guides most discussions.
Unconditional Positive Regard

Empathy
The facilitator's ability to understand and share the client's emotions and feelings.
Authenticity
The importance of the facilitator being honest and genuine in their empathy and unconditional positive regard.
Active listening
A reflective practice where the facilitator helps rephrase and clarify the client's thoughts, rather than interpreting or making suggestions.
Atmosphere of growth
An environment created by the facilitator that promotes client growth and self-actualization.
Psychodynamic Approach
A therapeutic approach that focuses on unconscious processes and childhood experiences.
Humanistic Approach
A therapeutic perspective that emphasizes personal growth and self-actualization.
