Reign of Terror

September 5, 1793 to July 27, 1794. The deadly result of the French revolution radicalized French revolutionaries massacred and publicly executed anyone suspected of “treason” or supporting the king. Robespierre was the ringleader

Queens response upon being told that her starving peasants subjects had no bread. because cake is more expensive than bread, it is an example of her obliviousness (lack of knowledge) to the conditions and daily lives of ordinary people

king Louis feared for his saftey and

bad to stay on the good side/ peasants / people

King Louis decided it would be a good idea to leave France and

mount a campaign from outside France

king louis was sent back to France and many thought king louis was a

traitor

as a result, a new constitution reduced his power to a

simple figurehead / constitutional monarch

a deep division was formed in the Revolution between

radicals and moderates

all criminals regardless of status recieve the same penalty : a quick and painless death by

fleeing/migrating and spread fear of the revolutionaries

suspend the monarchy and Louis was imprisioned

National Convention declared September 22 on 1792 and began

working to remove evidence of the monarch , and the church

All suspected enemies of the republic were sent to prision and prisions became a breeding

ground for Counter revolution. fearing this during the september massacre, mobs stormed the prisions and killed all nobles in the prision

Robspierre convinced radicals to send Louis

As the revolution turned incredibly violent and France began to conscript

many people outside paris were outraged and began counter revolution

Robspirer had moderates arrested and

his radicals then had total control of the government

A committee of public saftey

was established to protect french Republic from its enemies and became a 12 man dictatorship

Fear became an official government

The great terror was when Robspirre went

A moderate group called Thermidorians took over and attempted to restore stability and created a government called

The directory

Eventually Napoleon became a general and took control of troops , he created a name for himself by knocking Austria

out of the war. Staged a coup and dissolved the republic
