What is Partition? Why did it happen?

Partition is the separation of the Hindu state India and Muslim state Pakistan.

Britain’s Lord Mountbatten drew lines of partition to split countries because the British had to leave and tension between Hindus and Muslims.

Mass Migration and Violence in Partition

Partition led to the biggest mass migration in history. 12-14 million people became refugees and had to move across boarders.

During migration, 1 million people were killed by opposing religion.

Muhammad Ali Jinnah

Leader of Pakistan. Said that the 2 religions needed to be separated for their existence. Muslims needed their own state or they would disappear in India.

What is the Kashmir Conflict?

Kashmir was given choice between India and Pakistan (they were mainly Muslim but Hindu leader); chose to stay neutral. India helped fight Pakistanis that invaded and signed the INSTRUMENT OF ACCESSION which said Kashmir was a part of India.

Why was Kashmir disputed?

Pakistan thinks they should have Kashmir because population is mainly muslim.

India thinks they should have Kashmir because of the Instrument of Accession and it’s legally theirs.

What were the experiences of those living in Kashmir?

Constantly in the middle of wars between India and Pakistan, they don’t have a say so feel suppressed

How is the Kashmir Conflict a legacy of partition?

Because of the ongoing violence and the lack of voice of Kashmiri’s. Without Partition the two countries wouldn’t be fighting for this land. Partition made them hate each other
