Trend (Brannon, 2000)
A look that has the appeal of "newness" because it has been missing or scarce in the marketplace.
Fad
A concept with shorter staying power that has a particular beginning and a fixed end of influence, eventually disappearing after reaching peak popularity.
Fad Characteristic: Segmented
The condition where a fad is confined to particular segments in society.
Fad Characteristic: Trivial
The nature of a fad having a short life expectancy and being prone to being outmoded.
Fad Characteristic: Revived Style
The idea that a fad is not created but revived from a style that already existed in the lives of some subgroup.
Elements and Characteristics of a Trend
The four specific components including Duration of time, Acceptability, Cultural Basis, and Transitory increase or decrease.
Fringe Stage
The initial step in identifying a trend where an innovative idea or product develops and becomes known to the trendiest consumers.
Trendy Stage
The stage where fashion-forward brands and retailers assess the viability of a concept.
Mainstream Stage
The final stage in the process of identifying a trend where conservative consumers join the trend.
Microtrends
A phenomenon resulting from trend fragmentation.
Duration of time
A difference between fads and trends that depends on the span of period it lasted in the market.
Number of industries affected
The count of industries that take one product to make it more trending versus just a single company.
Industry acceptance
The measure of how particular companies invest in products.
Consumer adoption and perception of overall quality
A factor where the overall quality of a trend is introduced and perceived by the consumer.
Reason for rise
A characteristic depending on the demands of consumers in accordance with needs or wants.
Incubation period and life span
The buildup of a trend which can take long periods and produce effects that last for years.
Scope
The expansion or limitation of a product and its trend in the market.
Cultural roots
An element pertaining to the origin of a trend in the tradition or culture of a particular community or country.
