Theory
A broad method of understanding how something works that defines relationships between causes.
Models of Practice
Ways of viewing the relationship of the person, environment, occupation, and desired outcomes that serve to test theories.
Model of Human Occupation (MOHO)
A model of practice created by Gary Kielhofner that focuses on understanding and developing occupation identity to facilitate adaptation to demands in life patterns.
Person-Environment-Occupation-Performance (PEOP) Model
A model of practice explaining the interaction between person, environment, occupation, and performance across 5 dimensions: psychological, neurological, spiritual, physiological, and motor.

Canadian Model of Occupational Performance & Engagement (CMOPE)
A model of practice that depicts the client at the center with spirituality as the core motivating principle.

Frames of Reference (FOR)
Concepts focused on underlying causes of limitations that guide assessment and intervention.
Biomechanical FOR
A frame of reference for clients with musculoskeletal conditions aimed at increasing/maintaining strength and ROM, decreasing pain and swelling, and preventing contracture.
Rehabilitation FOR
A frame of reference for neurological or sensorimotor conditions aimed at returning the client to the highest level of function using adaptive techniques, environmental changes, and compensation.
Multicontext Treatment Approach FOR
A frame of reference for cognitive/perceptual conditions that uses self-monitoring and transference of learning in context to restore cognition and use compensatory strategies.
Neurofunctional Approach FOR
A frame of reference for severe brain injury that uses high-repetition, task-specific training performed within context to reach the highest level of function.
Behavioral and Cognitive Behavioral Approach FOR
A frame of reference for developmental disabilities and traumatic brain injury (TBI) aimed at changing patterns of behavior by altering objective, measurable behavior.
Cognitive Disability Approach FOR
A frame of reference for cognitive impairment or decline aimed at client participation by matching activities to cognitive level after brain injury.
Sensorimotor Approach FOR
A frame of reference for central nervous system (CNS) involvement aimed at relearning motor performance through repetition of motor patterns.
Motor Learning Approach FOR
A frame of reference for neurological patients with impaired movement but good sensation, aimed at retraining the brain to improve movement through task repetition and feedback.
Gary Kielhofner
The theorist who developed the Model of Human Occupation (MOHO) focusing on client volition, habituation, and occupational adaptation.
