What is it?

If a sentence has two verbs (for example modal verbs, perfect tense or “werden”), there is a fixed rule:

The conjugated verb is in position 2.
The second verb always goes to the end in the infinitive or past participle.

Example:

Ich kann dich in Italien besuchen.

I can visit you in Italy.

New cards

When do you use this?

You use this structure:

  • with modal verbs (can, must, want…(können/ müssen/ wollen)

  • in the perfect tense (have/to be (haben/sein) + past participle)

  • in the future tense (will (werden)+ infinitive)

  • when making more complex sentences

3
New cards

Why do you use this?

German uses this fixed word order so you can clearly see:

  • what the main verb is

  • what the additional information is

This makes the sentence structured and clear.
