Punishment
Also known as retribution, it is based off of getting revenge on the criminal. Every crime comes with a tariff (which is like a price tag that every crime comes with that the criminal must pay). Punishment shows disapproval of unacceptable behavior. Examples
Deterrence
Deterrence aims to reduce the amount of people committing crimes by using the punishment to install fear or doubt into people. It can be individual, preventing the offender from reoffending. Or it can be general, preventing members of the public from committing crime. Examples
Reform
Rehabilitating the offender in order to decrease the chance of them reoffending, and to improve them as a person. This reduces the number of offenders in a society. Reintegrates people into society. Directly helps with a the problems facing a person. Examples
Public protection
Keeps the public safe from the offender. Removes people who may be a bad influence on others within the society. Stops offences from happening (incapacitation). Examples
Reparation
Making amends between the criminal and the victim. Examples
