Variable
A letter or symbol used to represent an unknown.
Expression
A mathematical phrase made of numbers, variables, and operations; it has no equals sign.
Equation
A statement that two mathematical expressions are equal; it has an equals sign.
Like Terms
Terms with exactly the same variables raised to the same powers.
Coefficient
The number multiplied by a variable.
Constant
A fixed number with no variable.
Distributive Property
Multiplying the factor outside parentheses by every term inside the parentheses.
Sum
The result of addition; in verbal expressions, 'sum' signals addition.
Difference
The result of subtraction; in verbal expressions, 'difference' signals subtraction.
Product
The result of multiplication; 'product of' signals multiplication.
Quotient
The result of division; 'quotient of' signals division.
Increased By
A verbal phrase indicating addition.
Decreased By
A verbal phrase indicating subtraction in the order stated.
Less Than
A subtraction phrase in which the order is reversed.
Percent
A ratio out of 100; convert to decimal when used as a coefficient.
Reciprocal
A fraction with numerator and denominator switched; used when dividing by a fraction.
Perimeter
The total distance around a figure.
Literal Equation
An equation containing two or more variables that can be rearranged to solve for a specified variable.
Absolute Value
The distance a number is from zero.
Solution
A value that makes an equation true.
No Solution
An equation has no solution when simplification produces a false statement.
All Real Numbers
Every real number is a solution when simplification produces an identity/true statement.
Variable on Both Sides
An equation in which the same variable appears on both sides of the equals sign.
Original Price
The price before a sale, discount, or coupon is applied.
Discount Rate
The portion or percent by which an original price is reduced.
