Rooting reflex

a reflex in which a newborn turns its head in response to a gentle stimulus on its cheek

Sucking reflex

Is stimulated when something is put into baby's mouth

Moro reflex

Infant reflex where a baby will startle in response to a loud sound or sudden movement.

Tonic neck reflex

turning the head to one side, extending the arm and leg on that side, and flexing the limbs on the opposite side

Grasp reflex

an infantile reflex in which an infant closes her hand into a fist when her palm is touched

Babinski reflex

Reflex in which a newborn fans out the toes when the sole of the foot is touched

Stepping reflex

a neonatal reflex in which an infant lifts first one leg and then the other in a coordinated pattern like walking

Breastfeeding needs

about every 2-3 hours (even during the night)

seperation anxiety

- Starts up at about 6 months and lasts for about 3 years

- Cry when parent leaves

- Become inconsolable around unfamiliar people/places

- Show preference for familiar caregivers

- Considered normal development

Atraumatic care

therapeutic care that minimizes or eliminates the psychological and physical distress experienced by children and their families in the health care system

1-2 months gross motor

- Rolls from side to back

- Decrease head lag, sits w/ head midline

- Holds up head and supports on forearms when prone

1-2 months fine motor

-Displays diminishing grasp reflex

-Involuntarily releases after holding them briefly has no voluntary release abilities

1-2 months language/communication

Strong cry.

Throaty sounds.

Responds to human faces.

6-8 weeks: Begins to smile in response to stimuli.

3-6 month development

They explore their environment by using their sense of touch, infants begin staring at their hands and touching parts of their bodies, allowing for self-understanding and a beginning grasp of cause and effect

6-12 months gross motor

- Object permanence

- Begin to play games (peek-a-boo)

- Reaching, inspecting, holding, putting objects in the mouth, and dropping objects becomes a part of sensory exploration

- Learn how to manipulate the environment

- First steps usually occur around the 12 month mark

18 months milestones

- Walks independently

- 3+ words besides mama/dada

- Follows 1 step directions

- Scribbles

- Copies adult chores (poorly)

2 year milestones

- 2 word phrases ("more milk")

- Runs/kicks ball

- Points to body part if asked

- Notices when others are upset

- Walks up stairs WITH HELP

30 month milestone

- Know about 50 words

- Parallel play

- Twists at doorknobs

36 months milestone

- Sentences + simple conversations

- Plays with other kids

- Draws Circles

- Pedals a tricycle

4 year milestones

- Imaginative play + cooperates with peers

- 4+ word sentences

- Tells stories

- Knows colors

- Counting concept

- Hops on one foot

- Catches bounced ball

5 year milestones

- Wants to please friends

- Follows rules

- Longer stories, speaks clearly, uses future tense

- Counts to 10

- Draws person with multiple body parts

- Skips

- Stands on one foot for 10 seconds

6-year milestones

- Increasing independence + teamwork + understands fairness

- Complex sentences + strong storytelling • Simple problem-solving

- Riding bikes + dresses independently
