Words which look opposite but aren't

Sanction

To officially penalize, punish, or impose a boycott on an entity. Think: official ban.

Egregious

Outstandingly, outrageously bad or offensive. Think: a massive, undeniable fail.

Enervate

To cause someone to feel completely drained of energy or vitality; weaken. Think: running on zero battery.

Nonplussed

So surprised and confused that you are completely unsure how to react. Think: utterly bewildered or shocked.

Restive

Unable to remain still, silent, or submissive; increasingly restless or stubborn under control. Think: impatient, ready to move.

Perfunctory

Carried out with minimum effort, care, or interest; done purely out of routine obligation. Think: half-assed or phone-in energy.

Qualify

To limit, restrict, or modify a statement to make it less absolute. Think: adding a "but..." clause.

Specious

Superficially plausible or convincing, but actually false, flawed, or misleading. Think: sounds legit, but isn't.

Mercurial

Subject to sudden, unpredictable, or volatile changes of mood or mind. Think: wildly unpredictable or moody.

Champion

To aggressively support, defend, or publicly advocate for a cause, idea, or policy. Think: publicly fighting for an idea.
