New cards

What “type” of penis does the boar have? What is its most notable feature?

Penis type: fibroelastic penis

Most notable feature:

  • Corkscrew cock

    • Shaft of penis twists ONCE ANTICLOCKWISE

    • Then tip of penis is in an anticlockwise spiral

  • Glans are also small and thin… can’t really be seen on the penis

2
New cards

Describe how the boar penis looks when erect… What happens to the corkscrew conformation?

Length increases by 25% through extension of sigmoid flexure

Thickness increases by 20%

Penis spirals EVEN MORE… goes from 1 turn to 6 anticlockwise turns

3
New cards

Describe the boar prepuce… what is the preputial diverticulum?

Prepuce

  • Long and narrow, mimics the shape of penis

Associated to the dorsal wall of the prepuce is the preputial diverticulum

  • Is a gland that produces and distributes PHEROMONES

  • Possible for this area to become infected… results in swelling, can be mistaken for an umbilical hernia

4
New cards

Describe the boar testes… list some characteristics that could help you differentiate between these and other testicles

Testes sit ALMOST vertically in the scrotum

There IS a visible mediastinum in the center of the parenchyma

Capsule shows blood vessels across testicles… have a more linear pattern (different from ruminants, which are squiggly)

5
New cards

Describe the characteristics of the 4 main accessory glands in the boar…

1) Ampulla - POORLY DEVELOPED

2) Seminal vesicles (vesicular glands) - Large and lobulated, cranial extension into the abdominal cavity

3) Prostate - Small and compact; diffuse in some parts

  • Difficult to see; covered by bulbourethral glands)

4) Bulbourethral glands - LARGE and extensive… covers pretty much the entire dorsal length of the pelvic urethra
