Dentition
The arrangement or condition of the teeth in a particular individual.
Maxilla
Upper arch, attached to the skull/cannot move.
Mandibular
Lower arch ; movable jaw.
Occlusion
Contact between maxillary and mandibular teeth.
Primary dentition
20 teeth : 10 maxillary, 10 mandibular.
Mixed dentition
Both primary and permanent teeth are present.
Permanent dentition
32 permanent teeth, including 4 third molars/wisdom teeth.
Anterior
Front of mouth.
Posterior
Back of mouth.
Incisors
Central and lateral, anterior teeth, sharp used for cutting food, 8 total.
Canines/cuspids
Pointed teeth, long roots, used to tear food, 4 in total.
Premolars/bicuspids
Located between canines and molars, only permanent there are no pre molars in kids, 8 total.
Molars
Large posterior teeth, used to chew/grind food, for permanent can have up to 12 (including wisdom teeth).
Facial surface
Surface towards the face.
Buccal surface
Facial surface of posterior teeth toward cheek.
Lingual surface
Surface towards the tongue.
Mesial surface
Surface closest to midline.
Distal surface
Surface furthest from midline.
Incisal surface
Biting edge of anterior teeth.
Occlusal surface
Chewing surface of posterior teeth.

Maxillary right canine.
Teeth #8 & #9
Maxillary central incisors.
Tooth #11
Maxillary left canine.
Tooth #16
Maxillary left third molar.

Primary teeth designation
A-T, 20 primary teeth, no premolars.

Maxillary upper right.
Quad 2
Maxillary upper left.
Quad 3
Mandibular lower left.
Quad 4
Mandibular lower right.
Sextants
6 total sections in the mouth, split into 3 sections for upper jaw and 3 sections for lower jaw.
Anterior sextants
Contain 6 front teeth (canines and incisors).
Posterior sextants
Contain 5 teeth (premolars and molars) or two to three back teeth depending on children.
