Safety Goggles
Protective eyewear worn in the laboratory to shield the eyes from chemical splashes, heat, and hazardous debris.
Fire Blanket
Safety equipment used specifically to smother and extinguish a fire on a person's body or clothing.
Emergency Shower
Laboratory safety fixture used to rapidly rinse off large quantities of corrosive chemicals from a person's body.
Eye Wash Station
Laboratory equipment designed to continuously flush and wash corrosive or harmful substances out of the eyes.
Safety Flame
The yellow flame produced by a Bunsen burner when the air intake collar is fully closed.
Heating Flame
The hot blue flame produced by a Bunsen burner when the air intake collar is opened to allow oxygen to mix with gas.
Air Intake Collar (Virole)
The adjustable metal ring at the base of a Bunsen burner chimney turned to control airflow and change the flame type.
Bunsen Burner Chimney
The vertical metal tube of a Bunsen burner where gas and air mix before being ignited at the top.
Gas Adjustment Valve
The control valve on a Bunsen burner used to regulate the amount of gas delivered and adjust the flame height.
Acid-to-Water Dilution Rule
The safety procedure requiring acid to ALWAYS be added to water (never water to acid) to prevent violent splashing and heat reactions.
Chemical Wafting
The safety technique of using your hand to wave vapors toward your nose to detect odors without inhaling chemical fumes directly.
Test Tube Heating Angle
Holding a test tube at a 45∘ angle, pointing the open end away from all individuals, and moving it constantly while heating.
Broken Glass Container
A dedicated disposal container reserved exclusively for swept-up broken glassware to prevent injury and contamination.
Unused Chemical Disposal Rule
The principle that unused chemicals must NEVER be returned to their original container to avoid cross-contamination.
WHMIS Compressed Gas
A hazard symbol identifying gases stored under pressure that may explode if heated, dropped, or punctured.

WHMIS Corrosive
A hazard symbol indicating materials that can chemically erode metals as well as cause severe burns to human skin, eyes, and lungs.
WHMIS Acute Toxicity
A hazard symbol (represented by a skull and crossbones) indicating substances that can be toxic or lethal following short-term exposure to small amounts.
WHMIS Health Hazard
A hazard symbol for chemical agents that can cause serious long-term health risks, including cancer, birth defects, or organ damage.
Beaker
A wide, cylindrical glassware container with a pour spout used to hold, mix, and provide rough volume estimates of liquids.
Erlenmeyer Flask
A cone-shaped glassware container with a narrow neck designed for holding and swirling liquids without risking splashes or gas escaping easily.
Graduated Cylinder
A tall, narrow container marked with milliliter graduations used to make precise liquid volume measurements.
Scoopula
A metal spoon-like utensil used to transfer small quantities of solid chemical powders onto a balance.
Watch Glass
A circular, slightly concave piece of glass used as a cover for beakers or to hold small samples for observation.
