Fixed partial denture (FPD)
A dental restoration replacing missing teeth that is cemented/attached to adjacent teeth or implants and is not removable by the patient.
Implant-supported complete denture
A complete denture retained and stabilized by dental implants rather than relying on the mucosa alone.
Removable partial denture (RPD)
A partial denture that replaces some teeth, is removable by the patient, and rests on the oral mucosa via a denture base.
Overdenture
A denture that is supported by retained natural teeth/roots or implants and rests on soft tissue, improving retention and bone preservation.
Natural tooth-supported fixed partial denture
An FPD that is supported by natural teeth acting as abutments rather than implants.
Implant-supported fixed partial denture
An FPD that is anchored to dental implants for support rather than natural teeth.
Cantilever dental bridge
A bridge with a single anchor tooth, usually placed at the front; not advised for posterior placements due to higher stress on the anchor.
Maryland bonded bridge
A conservative bridge using a metal or porcelain framework bonded to the backs of adjacent teeth, reducing need for tooth modification.
Implant-supported bridge
A bridge that is anchored to dental implants rather than natural teeth for support.
Complete denture
A removable prosthesis that replaces all teeth in an arch; includes a denture base and artificial teeth.
Root-supported overdenture
An overdenture supported by remaining natural tooth roots rather than implants.
Implant-supported overdenture
An overdenture that is supported by dental implants.
Obturator
A maxillofacial prosthesis used to close or maintain the integrity of oral and nasal compartments after defects (e.g., cancer, cleft palate).
Traumatic ulcer (denture-induced irritation)
Mucosal irritation or ulcers caused by denture contact or ill-fitting prostheses.
Denture stomatitis
Candida fungal infection of the oral mucosa associated with denture use; treated with antifungals and sometimes chlorhexidine.
Angular cheilitis
Cracking/irritation at the corners of the mouth, often linked to nutritional deficiencies or denture-related factors.
Epulis fissuratum
Painless, tumor-like gingival growth caused by chronic denture irritation.
Denture marking
Identification marks on dentures to aid patient identification; required in some regions; involves surface markers and information.
Peri-implant mucositis
Reversible inflammation of the peri-implant mucosa caused by biofilm accumulation around an implant.
Peri-implantitis
Inflammation around a dental implant with progressive loss of supporting bone; may require non-surgical or surgical treatment.
Probing around implants
Use of a plastic implant probe to assess peri-implant health; gentler on implant surface than metal probes.
Ultrasonic cleaning around implants
Ultrasonic cleaning should avoid metal tips near implants; use plastic sleeves or implant-safe methods to prevent scratching.
Reline
Reshaping the underside of a denture with new material to improve fit without changing the teeth.
Rebase
Replacing the entire denture base while preserving the existing artificial teeth.
Denture base material (acrylic resin)
The base material for most dentures, typically a acrylic resin.
Denture teeth materials (porcelain, resin, or metal)
Artificial teeth in dentures may be made from porcelain, acrylic resin, or metal.
Complete denture components
Base, impression surface, polished surface, occlusal surface, and denture teeth.
Occlusal vertical dimension (OVD)
Vertical dimension of occlusion; loss can cause overclosure and temporomandibular joint problems.
Abutment
A natural tooth or implant that supports a prosthesis (FPD or denture).
RPD components (cingulum rest, occlusal rest, retainer, major connector, denture base, denture teeth)
Key parts of the removable partial denture framework that provide retention, stability, and support.
Nystatin and miconazole
Antifungal medications commonly used to treat denture stomatitis caused by Candida.
Chlorhexidine mouthwash
Antiseptic mouth rinse used to manage denture-related infections and mucositis.
Denture adhesives
Substances used to improve denture retention; should not be left in place overnight and should be cleaned away during denture care.
Denture cleaning do’s and don’ts
Practical guidelines for cleaning dentures (rinse/soak/remove adhesives, avoid whitening toothpaste, maintain appointments, overnight soaking, etc.).
