New cards

Physical enquiry question

“Are the coastal defences affective at Hunstanton?”

2
New cards

Human enquiry question

“Is Hunstanton planned for residents or tourists?”

3
New cards

What is the aim of the physical enquiry?

To investigate the effectiveness of coastal defences in protecting the coastline at Hunstanton?

4
New cards

Give two possible hypotheses of the physical enquiry

1- hard engineering strategies are affective at reducing erosion and protecting the coastline

5
New cards

What is the aim of the human enquiry?

To investigate whether the town of Hunstanton is designed to primarily meet the needs of residents or tourists

6
New cards

Give two possible hypotheses for the human enquiry

1- Hunstanton’s town centre and seafront are mainly planned for tourism rather than residential living.

2- land use near the seafront is dominated by tourism services, while residential services are further inland

7
New cards

What is primary data?

original information that you collect yourself through fieldwork

8
New cards

What is secondary data?

information that has already been collected by someone else and is available for you to use in your research.

9
New cards

Random sampling

Where samples are chosen at random. For example, if you are doing a questionnaire, every person has the same chance of being selected to answer questions

10
New cards

Advantage of random sampling

It is unbiased and more representative if the sample is large enough

11
New cards

What is systematic sampling?

Where samples are collected on a pre-decided system, eg, you pick a person once every regular interval

12
New cards

Advantage of systematic sampling

Avoids clustering:It prevents the selection of data from being clustered in one area, as can happen with random sampling

13
New cards

What is bias?

Collecting data which will fit what you expect to find

14
New cards

What is method 1 for physical primary data collection methods?

Field sketches

15
New cards

Field sketches description

A field sketch is a labelled drawing of a view. Geographers use them to record details about the landscape.

16
New cards

Equipment used for field sketch

Paper, pencil, ruler

17
New cards

How will a field sketch support the physical enquiry?

We can list the differences between the sketches and use them to approve/disprove the enquiry work.

  • whether the defences work in this case.

18
New cards

What is method 2 for physical primary data collection methods?

Groyne height of windward and leeward sides (on a table)

19
New cards

Description of method 2

With a tape measure, measure every 5m the height of sand on both the windward and leeward sides. If sand is build up on the updrift side then the groynes are effective. Repeat to ensure accuracy

20
New cards

What was the sampling strategy for method 2?

1 at concrete groynes, one at wooden groynes

21
New cards

How will the data from method two support the physical enquiry question?

It shows how much the sand has built up- if it is higher on one side than the other, due to longshore drift, then the groynes are effective as they are stopping the beach from getting destroyed

22
New cards

What is method 1 for human data collection methods?

Environmental surveys

23
New cards

Description of human primary data collection method 1 (environmental surveys)

Fill in the table via your own inferences of the surrounding environment- environmental quality is subjective.

24
New cards

Sampling strategy for human primary data collection method 1 (environmental survey)

1 in the residential area

1 in the tourist area

25
New cards

How is the environmental survey supposed to support the human enquiry “is Hunstanton designed for tourists or residents?”

we can make a hypothesis from the data collected [Hunstanton IS designed mainly for tourists]

26
New cards

Human primary data collection method 2

Pedestrian and traffic counts and land use counts

27
New cards

Description of human primary data collection method 2

  1. given a table- over a set period of time you are going to tally each time a vehicle passes by over a set period of time.

  2. Stop adding when the set limit is over

28
New cards

How will the data of Human primary data collection method 2 support the enquiry- “is hunstanton planned for residents or tourists?”

The movement in of vehicles could be an influx of tourists and the variety of shops can give us an idea of how the government targets the residents/tourists

29
New cards

What are all the data presentation types?

  • bar graph

  • Line graph

  • Radar graph

  • Pie graph

30
New cards

Bar graph description

A graph used to compare quantities or frequencies in different categories. The bars are drawn with gaps between them.

31
New cards

How to answer nine marker- “to what extent did your results and conclusions meet the aim of your enquiry

PEEL

INTRO- state enquiry question + aim

RESULTS/EVIDENCE- describe what you found

EXTENT/DISCUSSION- judge how far your results met the aims

CONCLUSION
