Step 1
Measure a set amount of acid into a conical flask using a pipette + add a few drops of indicator (phenolphthalein or methyl orange because there is a single, clear colour change)
Step 2
Slowly add alkali using burette until end point is reached (when the acid has been neutralised and the indicator changes colour)
Step 3
Carry out reaction using exactly the same volumes of alkali and acid but no indicator so the salt won’t be contaminated with indicator
Step 4
The solution that remains when the reaction is complete is only the salt and water.
Step 5
Slowly evaporate off some of the water and leave solution to crystallise. Filter off the solid and dry it
