Fertilization
The process where a male sperm cell unites with a female egg cell (ovum) to form a zygote.
Zygote
The fertilized egg cell formed after the sperm and egg unite. It contains a complete set of chromosomes, half from each parent.
Ovum (Egg)
The female reproductive cell produced in the ovaries. It is typically released during ovulation and can be fertilized by sperm.
Sperm
The male reproductive cell produced in the testes and mature in the epididymis. It carries half of the genetic material required to form a zygote. Over 300,000,000 million in an ejaculation
Ovulation
The release of a mature ovum from the ovary, typically occurring around the middle of the menstrual cycle.
Embryo
The early stage of development of a fertilized egg, from the moment of fertilization until the eighth week of pregnancy.
Fetus
Ā The developing human from the ninth week of pregnancy until birth.
Menstruation
The shedding of the uterine lining when pregnancy does not occur, leading to the discharge of blood and tissue from the vagina.
Uterus
: The organ in females where a fertilized egg implants and develops into a fetus during pregnancy.
Vulva
The external female genital organs. The vulva includes the labia major and minor, the clitoris, the opening of the vagina and its glands, the opening of the urethra, and the mons pubis (the rounded area in front of the pubic bones that becomes covered with hair at puberty
Fallopian Tubes
The tubes that connect the ovaries to the uterus. Fertilization typically occurs in the fallopian tubes.
Testes
: The male reproductive organs that produce sperm and hormones, including testosterone.
Prostate Gland
: A male reproductive gland that produces fluid to nourish and transport sperm during ejaculation.
Cervix
The lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. It dilates during childbirth to allow passage of the baby.
Conception
Ā The moment when fertilization occurs, marking the beginning of pregnancy.
Pregnancy Test
Ā A test used to detect the presence of the hormone hCG, which is produced during pregnancy.
