Chemistry
The science that studies matter, its properties, composition, and changes.
Matter
Anything that has mass and occupies space (has volume).
Mass
The amount of matter in an object; commonly measured in grams.
Volume
The amount of space that matter occupies; commonly measured in liters or cubic centimeters.
Physical properties
Characteristics that can be observed or measured without changing the substance.
Density
Mass per unit volume.
Elasticity
The ability of a material to return to its original shape after deformation.
Luster
The shiny or reflective quality of a material.
Hardness
Resistance to scratching or indentation.
Temperature
A measure of the hotness or coldness of a substance; related to thermal energy.
Viscosity
A liquid’s resistance to flow; thickness of a liquid.
Melting point
The temperature at which a solid changes to a liquid.
Boiling point
The temperature at which a liquid changes to a gas.
Malleability
The ability to be hammered or pressed into shape without breaking.
Ductility
The ability to be drawn into wires.
Conductivity
The ability to conduct heat or electricity.
Solubility
The ability of a substance to dissolve in a solvent.
Chemical properties
Characteristics that describe how a substance changes or reacts to form new substances.
Combustion
A chemical reaction with oxygen that releases heat and light.
Rusting
Oxidation of iron forming iron oxide; a chemical change.
Oxidation
A chemical reaction involving loss of electrons or reaction with oxygen.
Flammability
The ability of a substance to burn.
Reactivity
The tendency of a substance to undergo chemical change.
