 region is an area of Earth defined by one of more characteristics

what is scale?

the relationship between the portion of Earth being studied and Earth as a whole

the relationships amongst people and objects

what is space?

the physical gap between two objects/locations

what is GI Science?

analysis of data about Earth acquired through satellite and other technologies, presenting it in layers

what does GI Science use?

photogrammetry and remote sensing

what is remote sensing?

acquisition of data about earth’s surface from satellite orbiting

what is GPS?

system that determines the precise location of something on Earth

identification of a piece of info through the use of longitude and latitude

what is mapping?

a reference tool and communications tool

what is projection and the problem of distortion?

projection is the scientific method of transferring locations on Earth’s surface to a flat map. the problem of distortion is the shape, distance, relative size, and direction

what is the meridian?

arc connecting the north and south poles (AKA longitude)

what is the prime meridian?

prime meridian = 0 degrees longitude at Greenwich, England

what are parallels?

circle around the globe parallel to the equator (latitude)

what is the coordinated universal time (UTC)?

prime meridian standard reference for all time at Greenwich, England.
