Rule 1
The oxidation state of an element in its free (uncombined) form is always zero.
Rule 2
The oxidation state of a monatomic ion is equal to its charge.
Rule 3
Add up all the oxidation numbers in the whole thing.
If it’s a neutral compound → they should add up to 0
If it’s a charged ion → they should add up to the charge
Rule 4
Metals have a positive oxidation states:
Group 1A metals have an oxidation state of +1
Group 2A metals have oxidatation state of +2

Nonmetals use guidelines in the table. Entries at the top of the table procedural order over entires at the bottom.
