Watchkeeping
The continuous division of qualified personnel tasked with operating a ship's systems and machinery without interruption.
Officer on Watch (OOW)
A designated deck or engineer officer responsible for bridge navigation or engine room operation, acting as the representative of the Master or Chief Engineer.
Six Senses of Engineering
A methodology where watchkeepers use touch, hearing, smell, visuals, taste, and kinesthetic sense to monitor and evaluate the condition of machinery.
Interpreting the logbook
The act of tracking previous machinery parameters to analyze current conditions or identify emerging problems.
Standard Watch System
A rotational schedule typically involving a 4-hour duty period followed by an 8-hour rest period.
COLREGs (1972)
International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, which set the standard for safe navigation and lookout responsibilities.
Lookout
A duty focused on maintaining continuous vigilance through sight and hearing to appraise navigation risks and collision dangers.
Restricted Visibility Protocols
Procedures following COLREGs that include using fog signals, lights, radar, and maintaining engines at immediate readiness for maneuvering.
Turning Gear
A mechanism used to rotate the engine slowly, required to be engaged for 10 minutes after arrival and used for at least one full revolution before departure.
Unattended Machinery Space (UMS)
An engine room operational mode where monitoring is automated, allowing the machinery space to remain unmanned for specific periods.
Dead Man Alarm
A safety system for engineers alone in UMS spaces that requires resetting every 24 minutes; failure to reset within a 15-minute countdown triggers a bridge alarm.
HFO Changeover Viscosity
The parameter at which the viscosity controller should be set during the transition between Diesel Oil and Heavy Fuel Oil, specifically between 11 and 15cSt.
Indicated Power (IKW) Formula
IKW=60×1000MIP(N/m2)×A(cm2)×L(m)×N×n, where N is RPM and n is the number of cylinders.
Oil Record Book (ORB) Part 1
A mandatory record for ships of 400 gross tons and above (and tankers of 150 gross tons) used to document machinery space operations and sludge management.
MARPOL Annex I
International regulations focused on preventing pollution by oil from ships, governing the use of Oil Record Books and discharge standards.
SOPEP
Ship Oil Pollution Emergency Plan; a mandatory prevention plan for ships over 400GT (150GT for tankers) intended to manage oil spill incidents.
Slow Down Protection
An automatic safety stage where the engine reduces to dead slow (below 30RPM) due to parameters like low lube oil pressure at 1.5bar or high exhaust temp at 450∘C.
Shut Down Protection
The highest stage of protection that cuts fuel supply to stop the engine, triggered by critical faults such as lube oil pressure falling below 1bar or overspeed at 107% of MCR.
Starting Interlock
A safety device that prevents the engine from starting if systems like the turning gear are engaged or if essential pumps are not running.
Indicator Diagram types
Diagnostic tools including Pressure/Angle (draw card), Pressure/Volume (power card), Weak Spring (scavenging), and Delta Pressure/Angle (rate of change).
Oil Mist Detector
A safety device used in the crankcase to detect the generation of vapor early to prevent potential explosions.
Engine Room Resource Management (ERM)
A system managing personnel, equipment, and information to prevent accidents through improved communication, leadership, and teamwork.
Situational Awareness
The ability to perceive the current state of machinery and personnel, recognize hazards, and anticipate future risks to prevent incidents.
Error Trapping
The practice of interrupting a chain of small mistakes (planning, communication, or action errors) before they escalate into an accident.
Assertiveness
The professional responsibility to respectfully communicate safety concerns or question decisions regardless of rank to prevent mishaps.
BPF Leader
An ineffective leadership style characterized by being a Babysitter, Problem Solver, or Firefighter, leading to crew dependency.
MIC Leader
An effective leadership style where the officer acts as a Motivator, Implementer, and Communicator.
Stages of Stress
The physiological progression through Alarm (increased alertness), Resistance (gradual energy depletion), and Exhaustion (judgment failure).
ILO Minimum Hours of Rest
International Labor Organization requirement of at least 10 hours of rest in any 24-hour period and 77 hours in any 7-day period.
ILO Maximum Hours of Work
International Labor Organization limit of no more than 14 hours of work in any 24-hour period and 72 hours in any 7-day period.
