U.S. Civil War

A conflict from 1861-1865 and the deadliest war in U.S. history where the North (Union) fought the South (Confederacy).

Reconstruction

The period of time after the Civil War to rebuild the country, which lasted until 1877.

Sectionalism

Putting the needs of your section of the country above the needs of the country.

States Rights

A cause of the Civil War based on the feeling held by many Southerners that the states had a right to leave the country if they wished.

Election of Abraham Lincoln

The event that triggered the secession of the Southern States.

13th Amendment

The amendment that made slavery illegal in the U.S.

14th Amendment

The amendment that established that former slaves became citizens.

15th Amendment

The amendment stating that all men regardless of race were given the right to vote.

Union

Also known as the North, they won the Civil War after the South surrendered in 1865.

Confederacy

Also known as the South, they fought against the North and surrendered in 1865.
