CELL TRANSPORT
Movement of materials in and out of a cell
PASSIVE TRANSPORT
A form of transport where no energy/ATP is required
SIMPLE DIFFUSION
Molecules move from high to low concentration
FACILITATED DIFFUSION
A form of passive transport that uses membrane proteins or protein channels to move molecules from high to low
OSMOSIS
The movement (diffusion) of water through a cell membrane
ACTIVE TRANSPORT
Uses energy (ATP) to move solutes against their gradients from low to high concentration
ENDOCYTOSIS
The process in which materials are taken in by a cell
PINOCYTOSIS
Also known as cell drinking; the movement of liquids and dissolved substances into a cell
PHAGOCYTOSIS
Also known as cell eating; the movement of large particles, such as food or bacteria, into a cell
EXOCYTOSIS
The process in which materials are released from a cell; a form of active transport in which a cell transports molecules out of the cell
Isotonic
A state at equilibrium with 50% water/ 50% solute; same water inside and out
Hypertonic
A state with more water inside than out, causing the cell to shrink
Hypotonic
A state with more water outside than inside
