1
New cards

lift

component of force that acts perpendicular to the direction of flow

2
New cards

bernoulli’s principle

pressure created from a moving fluid over an object. high velocity = low-pressure area, low velocity = high pressure area

3
New cards

what causes lift

moves from high pressure to low pressure

4
New cards

magnus effect

effect of rotation on an object’s path as it moves through a fluid.

5
New cards

when a ball is struck with an _________ force, there is both linear and angular rotation

eccentric (off-centre force)

6
New cards

types of spin

topspin, backspin, side spin

7
New cards

topspin

causes the ball to drop/dip and travel shorter in flight = makes it harder of opponent

8
New cards

backspin

causes the ball to rise higher in the air and travel further.

9
New cards

when can u use backspin?

when aiming to maximise distance

10
New cards

side spin

causing ball to curve to the left/right. Used to curve around opponent/obstacle

New cards

steps to spin

Off-centre, eccentric force is applied causing spin. Bernoulli’s principle explains the effects of spin on the flight path. Boundary layer creates a high/low pressure & velocity zone (top of ball). Side with boundary layer travelling with oncoming air creates a high/ low pressure zone (bottom of ball). Pressure differential causes ball to move from high pressure to low. Movement from high to low pressure creates a lift force–Magnus effect
