What are the 2 types of sampling method in structured observations?

  1. Event sampling

  2. Time sampling

2
New cards

What is event sampling?

  • Counting the amount of times a behaviour occurs in an individual

  • Acts as a frequency count

3
New cards

What is a strength of event sampling?

  • Useful when the target behaviour happens infrequently and could otherwise be missed

4
New cards

What is a weakness of event sampling?

  • Specified behaviour might be too complex

  • May get overlooked if multiple behaviours are happening at once

5
New cards

What is time sampling?

  • The target behaviour is only recorded at specific intervals decided by the observer eg occurence is recorded for 10 mins every hour

6
New cards

What are the strengths of time sampling?

  • Can reduce the number of observations needed

7
New cards

What are the weaknesses of time sampling?

  • May not be representative if only recording at intervals

8
New cards

How can the reliability of an observation be increased?

  • Use inter-observer reliability where there are multiple observers
