Resource

Something that we need to survive.

Natural Resources

Things that we use that come from nature.

Capital Resources

Things that we use that have been made or changed in some way.

Human Resources

People that do a job that is useful to us.

Natural Forest

A forest that grows on its own in nature without the help of people.

Cultivated Forest

A forest that is planted or maintained by people.

Coal

A mineral resource in Virginia that is burned as a power source or fuel.

Gravel

A mineral resource in Virginia used to make roads, walkways, and concrete.

Limestone

A mineral resource used as building materials and for roads, as well as for its white color in paint and toothpaste.

Granite

A mineral resource used for building materials, countertops, tombstones, and sculptures.

Sand

A mineral resource used for making bricks, glass, and concrete, as well as in farming and for recreation.

Rock

A hard object in the Earth made up of two or more minerals.

Mineral

One chemical that is the same throughout the entire piece.

Ore

A large amount of a mineral found in a rock that can be extracted or removed and sold for profit.

Groundwater

Water that is found under the surface of the ground.

River

Flowing streams of water that are moving downhill towards a larger body of water.

Lake

Large areas of water that are completely surrounded by land.

Reservoir

Large lakes (natural or man-made) that are moving downhill towards a larger body of water.

Bay

Areas of water that are surrounded by land on three sides and flow into a larger body of water.

Ocean

Huge areas of salt water.

Watershed

An area of land where water flows over and through to a single collection place (body of water).

Virginia's Three Major Watersheds

The Chesapeake Bay watershed, the Gulf of Mexico watershed, and the North Carolina Sound watershed.

Watershed Address

A list of places that water flows on its way to its collection body of water.

We all live downstream

The concept that since all land in a watershed is connected by the water flowing through it, pollutants in one area can affect all of the land and water in that watershed.
