Haematopoiesis
The process of producing blood cells in red bone marrow

Stem cells that can develop into all types of blood cells in red bone marrow
Red Blood Cells (Erythrocytes)
Blood cells that transport oxygen from lungs to tissues and carbon dioxide from the tissues to the lungs, contains hemoglobin
White Blood Cells (Leukocytes)
Blood cells involved in defending the body against infection and disease
Platelets (Thrombocytes)
Cell fragments involved in blood clotting, prevents excessive blood loss
Yellow Bone Marrow
A type of bone marrow that primarily stores triglycerides (fat) as an energy reserve, found in the medullary cavity
Red Bone Marrow
Produces blood cells through haematopoiesis
Adipocytes
Fat cells that make up most of yellow bone marrow, stores triglycerides
Triglycerides
Stored fats that serve as a long-term energy reserve for the body
Energy Reserve
Backup source of energy during periods of increased energy demand like starvation, severe illness, and prolonged fasting
Marrow Conversion
Under conditions of severe blood loss or increased demand for blood cells, some yellow marrow may convert back to red marrow
