What happened during Fletcher V Peck?
the georgia land had already been sold to other people, including John Peck, who sold some of it to Robert Fletcher. Fletcher then sued Peck, saying he didn’t really own the land because the state had taken it back.
What did the supreme court say?
The Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice John Marshall, said Peck was right — once Georgia sold the land, it was a legal contract, even if it started with corruption. Georgia couldn’t cancel it later because the Constitution protects contracts.
