Resolution
The ability of an ultrasound system to display two structures that are close together as distinct and accurate images.
Axial Resolution
The ability of a system to display two structures that are very close together when they are positioned parallel to the sound beam's main axis (front-to-back).

Less Ringing
The creation of a short pulse containing few cycles (typically 2 or 3) by dampening the crystal after electrical excitation, which improves axial resolution.
Lateral Resolution
The ability to distinctly identify two structures that are very close together when they are positioned side-by-side or perpendicular to the sound beam's main axis.

Point-Spread Artifact
An artifact created when two side-by-side structures are positioned closer together than the width of the sound beam, causing them to appear as a single wide reflection.
Clinical Comparison of Axial vs. Lateral Resolution
Axial resolution is superior to lateral resolution in clinical imaging because ultrasound pulses are shorter than they are wide.
Clinical Compromise
The practice of selecting transducer frequency based on required imaging depth, balancing high frequencies (which improve image detail) against low frequencies (which provide deeper penetration).
Focusing
The technique of concentrating sound beam energy into a narrower beam to improve lateral resolution, effective primarily in the near field and focal zone.
External Focusing
A form of fixed focusing achieved by placing a curved lens in front of the PZT material.

Internal Focusing
The most common form of fixed focusing, achieved using a curved active element (crystal) to concentrate sound energy into a tighter beam.

Phased Array Focusing
An adjustable focusing technique controlled by the electronic components of the ultrasound system, used exclusively with multi-element array transducers.
Effects of Focusing
The four beam modifications resulting from focusing: reduced beam diameter in near field and focal zone, shallower focal depth (reduced near zone length), increased beam divergence beyond focal zone, and smaller focal zone.
