Compare Ozyamndias and one other poem

My Last Duchess:

  • both suggest human power is weak. ozymandias says “the lone and level sands stretch far away”, which suggests human power is small compared to the power of nature, and we are “Lone”. My last duchess uses mocking language such as the form of dramatic monologue, with enjambment. enjambment suggests a sense of lack of control as the words are spilling over

  • both poems suggest the origin of pride, and sense of personal power comes from within. ozymandias is in the form of the sonnet which is a love poem, suggesting love for oneself. also, mockign langauge such as “king of kings”. mld uses the phrase “nine hundred year old name” to suggest patriotism and love for own name.

  • the poems differ as in mld the subject of oppression is the duchess, whereas in ozymandias figures of power are considered oppressive but also prone to oppression. this suggests that the poems differ on opinions of who oppression impacts the most.

Comparing Emigrée and one other poem

Storm on the Island

  • Both poems describe conflict as relatable to everyone and as a personal struggle. Both poems use blank verse and no rhyme scheme to create a conversational and relatable tone. The use of no rhyme scheme suggests a serious topic. Also, in SOTI, a single stanza could be seen as people huddling together, suggesting each person is important.

  • Both poems describe nature as being all powerful. in SOTI the islanders seem to be in control as they “Built our houses squat”, however the use of enjambment suggests that this is sense of calm and control is useless compared to nature. In Emigrée, constant caesura is used to demonstrate humans attempts at controlling nature, however there is enjambemnet suggesting the lack of control.

  • The poems differ as SOTI has negative undertones and Emigrée has more positive ones. Emigrée contains a lexical field of sunlight when discussing nature such as “Light” “Bright” and “white”, demonstrating that their are positives to nature as well. In SOTI, the use of the metaphor like a “spitting cat” to describe nature suggests that their is a sense of ferocity and feral nature to the storm the island is facing.
