VO2max
Maximal oxygen uptake; the maximal ability of the heart, lungs, and blood to deliver oxygen to working muscles during dynamic exercise.
VO2peak
The highest oxygen consumption achieved during an exercise test, which may vary in relation to VO2max.
Absolute VO2
Measured in liters per minute (L/min) or milliliters per minute (ml/min) without reference to body mass, typically used for non-weight-bearing exercises.
Relative VO2
Expressed relative to body mass in milliliters per kilogram per minute (ml/kg/min), allowing comparisons of cardiorespiratory fitness across different body sizes.
Gross VO2
Total oxygen consumption during both rest and exercise.
Net VO2
Oxygen consumption of exercise only, excluding resting consumption.
Maximal exertion test
A test that measures VO2max directly, requiring expensive equipment and trained personnel.
Submaximal exertion test
A test that estimates VO2max and can be performed with lower costs and time requirements.
HRmax determination
The maximum heart rate, which is crucial for accurate testing and exercise prescription.
APHRmax
Age-predicted heart rate maximum, calculated typically as 220 minus age.
RPE
Rating of Perceived Exertion, a scale used to measure exercise intensity based on an individual's subjective perception.
