Trypticase Soy Broth

Enriched media that supports the growth of a wide variety of organisms and allows observation of hemolysis.

Alpha hemolysis

Partial lysis of red blood cells resulting in a green coloration on Blood Agar.

Beta hemolysis

Complete lysis of red blood cells resulting in a clear zone around colonies on Blood Agar.

Gamma hemolysis

No lysis of red blood cells, resulting in no change in color of the Blood Agar.

Columbia Colistin Naldixic Acid Agar (CNA)

Enriched, selective, and differential media that isolates gram-positive bacteria.

Chocolate Agar

Enriched media that supports the growth of fastidious organisms such as Haemophilus and Neisseria.

Modified Thayer-Martin Agar (MTM)

Enriched and selective media used to isolate Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

MacConkey Agar (MAC)

Differential and selective media used to isolate and differentiate gram-negative bacilli.

Lactose fermenter on MacConkey Agar

Results in pink colonies, indicating a positive reaction.

Hekton Agar (HE)

Differential and selective media used to differentiate Salmonella and Shigella.

Burkholderia cepacia agar (Burk)

Differential and selective media used to isolate Burkholderia cepacia in cystic fibrosis cultures.

Mueller-Hinton agar

Base media used for E test and Kirby-Bauer testing.

Vancomycin Screen Agar (Vanco)

Selective media used to screen for vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus.
